Job Title: Brewer
Reports To: Production Manager
Position Status: Full-time; Hourly

Pay Rate: $24-27/hour; DOE

Position Summary
The Brewer position is responsible for many operations related to production in one of California’s most highly recognized breweries, producing just under 9,000 BBL in 2024. While primarily responsible for brewhouse operations, you will be involved in every step of the production process. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Wort Production: Control brewday functions of a 15 BBL, 3 vessel Premier Stainless brewhouse to produce wort on a daily basis. Includes raw materials milling, chemical and hop additions, lab testing, CIP and sanitation of brewhouse and wort transfer pathways, delivering wort to fermentation vessels, spent grain removal, and maintaining detailed logs throughout the process.
  • Yeast Management: Monitor yeast health throughout the fermentation process. This includes pitching yeast, managing propagation, and ensuring optimal conditions for yeast activity.
  • Cellar Duties: Conduct gravity, pH, temperature, and off-flavor assessment checks during fermentation, lagering, and/or barrel-aging.
    Perform trub/hop dumps.
    Participate in dry hopping, fruiting, fining, and transfers (both unfiltered and centrifuged). Experience with Alfa Laval separators ++, but not necessary.
    Work with the production team to accomplish tasks in an efficient and collaborative manner.
  • Cleaning and Sanitation: Handle cleaning and sanitation chemicals with care. Properly and regularly clean and sanitize fermentors, brite tanks, brewhouse, and other brewery equipment/surfaces to maintain quality and prevent contamination.
  • Logistics: Report raw materials and brewing supplies inventory to the Production Manager. Assist in moving and organizing finished goods, raw materials, kegs, etc, between the production facility and distribution warehouse next door.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and ladders as needed. Employee will be required to obtain OSHA Forklift certification upon hire.
  • Safety Reporting: Promptly report any maintenance or safety-related issues to ensure a safe working environment
  • Brand Representation: Work at occasional festivals, events, and/or promotional activities as a Burgeon Beer Company ambassador. Engage with beer enthusiasts and share your passion.

Brewery equipment includes, but is not limited to:

  • 15 BBL, 3 Vessel Premier Stainless Brewhouse (Steam) with Cold and Hot Liquor Tanks
  • 16 Fermentors ranging from 15 BBL to 90 BBL
  • 6 Brite Tanks ranging from 30 BBL (incl. Horizontal Lagering Tanks) to 90 BBL
  • Alfa Laval Brew250 Centrifuge
  • PSA CB-Series 6 Head Canning Line with Depalletizer
  • Premier Stainless 5 Head Keg Washer
  • Anton Paar QC analysis equipment (CBOX, DMA35, PFD Filler)

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a production brewery or a high-volume brewpub is essential. A strong understanding of the fundamentals of brewing science is crucial. This includes knowledge of ingredients, fermentation, and quality control.
  • You should be able to read, understand, and follow all Production Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Must be a team player with a friendly demeanor
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and supervisors
  • Ability to complete paperwork with a high degree of accuracy
  • Physical ability to lift up to 170 pounds
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend or lift for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to follow and enforce safety protocols
  • Must be able to work weekends and some holidays
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and emergency situations in a swift manner
  • Must have a strong work ethic and ability to multitask
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Clean driving record

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assisting packaging with materials and building case trays for canning runs
  • Efficiently troubleshoot maintenance issues
  • Safely operate company forklifts
  • Report any maintenance issues or concerns to your supervisor and/or Production Manager
  • Promote and represent Burgeon Beer Co. in a positive manner
  • Stay up to date on all product offerings
  • Communicate any escalated issues, grievances or safety concerns to your supervisor
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings (paid) unless absence has been excused
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by company co-founders
